Who is Eligible to Become a Member of Modern Divorce?
Modern Divorce welcomes attorneys, mental health professionals (licensed therapists, social workers, psychologists), and financial professionals (CPAs, financial planners, CDFAs) who are committed to non-adversarial dispute resolution.
Members must be licensed to practice in New Jersey and complete collaborative divorce training through an approved program such as those offered by the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals (IACP).
We prioritize professionals who share our commitment to helping families navigate divorce with dignity, respect, and creative problem-solving rather than courtroom battles.
What are the Benefits of Membership?
Membership in Modern Divorce connects you with a community of like-minded professionals while expanding your practice in meaningful ways.
You'll gain visibility through our professional directory on our website, receive referrals from potential clients actively seeking collaborative solutions, and access ongoing educational opportunities including workshops, advanced training, and CLE credits.
Beyond the professional benefits, you'll join a supportive network of colleagues who understand the challenges and rewards of this work—people who chose this path because they believe there's a better way to help families through divorce.
What Training or Certifications are Required to Join?
All members must complete a basic collaborative divorce training program through an IACP-recognized provider or equivalent. For attorneys, this typically involves a 2-3 day intensive training covering collaborative law principles, interest-based negotiation, and the team approach. Mental health professionals and financial neutrals complete specialized training for their roles in the collaborative process.
We also require members to commit to ongoing advanced training to stay current with best practices. Modern Divorce hosts annual educational programs, and we encourage attendance at IACP conferences and other professional development opportunities. If you're new to collaborative practice, we can point you toward upcoming training opportunities.
What is the Time Commitment for Being a Member?
Modern Divorce is designed to fit into your existing practice, not take over your life.
We hold general membership meetings and occasional networking events. Committee participation (such as the marketing committee, education committee, or board service) is completely optional but welcomed if you want to get more involved.
Many members participate minimally while still receiving referrals and staying connected, while others choose to be highly active in shaping the organization's direction. The beauty of membership is that you control your level of involvement based on your practice needs and availability.
What Dispute Resolution Methods do Members Practice?
Modern Divorce members specialize in non-adversarial and alternative dispute resolution methods—specifically collaborative divorce, mediation, and other settlement-focused approaches that help families resolve disputes peacefully. We do NOT support traditional divorce litigation.
Our members have made a conscious choice to move away from adversarial courtroom battles and toward cooperative, solution-oriented processes that prioritize the wellbeing of families and children.
Whether you practice exclusively collaborative divorce, also offer mediation services, or provide neutral financial or mental health support across various ADR methods, Modern Divorce is for professionals committed to the idea that there's a better, more respectful way to help families navigate divorce.
